We played a slightly different version in my 6th grade music class, where the gesture associated with our name had to somehow be alliterative to the first letter in our name. So, being Breanna, my gesture was something like a ballerina twirl (Breanna-B-Ballerina).

I haven't played the game in years and probably would never have thought to apply it in a jazz class setting. Thanks for such a great idea, Carl!

"Perhaps the most significant note in the video: wanting to be liked and admired can be an impediment to our creativity as dancers. "

I agree on your statements regarding this. It's one of the big problems I'm working on.

What's funny is it's not a problem in my writing, just my dancing. I guess its the competitive, social aspect of it that differs from the far more introverted art of writing.

Thanks for posting!

You know your declaration of showcase has all the rest of us as competitors knowing that we have to bring it (and good-naturedly saying things like "aw crap" under our breath). I'm excited to see what your time with Jo brings to ya'll's partnership!

I recall reading some excerpts of her writing while I was in Montreal studying philosophy. One of my professors had known her and suggested I take a look into her discussions.

I don't recall many specifics, although I could go back and turn up my notes or the excerpts themselves.

Thanks for the reminder, I'll make a point to reread her works.

Very interesting. Have you read dance philosophy works from Maxine Sheets Johnstone. She talks about some kinds of dance movement as going beyond the idea of the brain sending messages to the body to perform such and such a movement. Instead she speaks about the intelligence written into the nature of the body itself. I think what you write about here is allowing the body to show itself more fully. By doing so, I think it does create a sacred space ie a phenomena that was shown through the body and does not come only from you. I have experienced this phenomena more in partnered dancing. It is probably easier on a solo level,; however, I just don't dance much by myself.
