On Hold

Jazz Dance Blog will be on hold for a while.

Currently in the works is a joint blog project with Alain Wong, that is being designed by our mutual friend Patrick Beland.  This blog project will cover many of the same aspects but with more featured articles, event reviews and interviews from more contributors and authors.

If you are interested in potentially contributing articles, reviews, interviews, video footage, or photography on the lindy hop scene and lindy hop events please feel free to contact me at ferrix (at) gmail (dot) com.

In the meantime, go dance.

Blogger Appreciation Day

Darren over at ProBlogger has pronounced today, April 14th, as the [unofficial] Blogger Appreciation Day.

I show my appreciation for the following bloggers/blogs.

  • Alain Wong – Alain got the idea of blogging about dancing into my head with his blog and I’ve since grown quite a considerable readership (for a tiny niche blog) and networked with a number of other bloggers who I would never have had the chance if not for my inspiration from Alain.  We are now working on a collaborative blog project that will launch this summer.
  • Alex Steffen – Alex is a wonderful writer in the eco and sustainability blogging community as the executive editor of WorldChanging.com.  I began reading this blog a year or two ago and it definitely helped shape my goals and aspirations for the future.  I keep up with his blog and many other eco and sustainability blogs on a regular basis.
  • Lifehacker – Organization has never really been my strong suit.  Pair that with my ability to get sidetracked and you’ve got a definite prevalence to get off topic, lose track of time and much more.  Lifehacker is a great blog that includes articles and links to great efficiency tricks and tools.
  • Arstechnica – I have a fascination with all things technologically-related whether it is laws, the latest developments, gadgets or games.  Arstechnica keeps me up-to-date on all of these topics with exceptional reporting and writing.

This is a non-exclusive list but these are my highlights.

Linked-In (March 3rd)

Here’s a trio of links for March 3rd.

  • Peter Strom’s Music Blog – While not specifically jazz music oriented Peter has recently relaunched his music blog.  Peter is a prominent member of the lindy hop community and is widely respected for his dancing and musical taste.  He is one of the administrators for the Lindy Hoppers Fund, an organizer for Swing and Soul, and a world-class instructor.
  • Alain Bikes for Microcredit – Alain Wong, lindy hop blogger and instructor out of Montreal, will be biking to raise money for microcredit and to empower women.  He has already raised 750$ and a good portion of donations (up to 1000$) will be matched by StandoutJobs, a recent Montreal startup co-founded by Cat’s Corner‘s Fred Ngo.
  • Northeast Girl Jam – Northeast Girl Jam continues the trend of many outstanding Girl Jams but this time on the east coast.  The first girl jam was organized by Giselle Anguizola in 2005 and they have since sprung up all over the west coast and even Australia.  If you didn’t catch the video round-up, Jojo (the organizer of NE Girl Jam) and Giselle (teaching at NE Girl Jam) are featured in the Hot Pockets routine.  I’m excited to attend (as a lead) and am even featured as a guest instructor.

Enjoyed the links or would like to submit an article of interest, let me know.

Interview with Frankie Manning

Thanks to Alain’s blog for posting up this little tidbit about an interview with Frankie Manning from the AARP.

Frankie Manning is an exemplar of lindy hop and has been for many years. If you haven’t read his autobiography buy it on Amazon or find a friend who has it. He is both an inspiration to watch in old clips and to hear and meet in person today.

The classic clip that every lindy hopper (and really everyone) should see from Hellzapoppin’ in 1941.

A recent clip from Lindyfest 2007 where Frankie Manning is dancing with another amazing dancer, Dawn Hampton.

I’ll be back to wrap up my review of ULHS soon.
